Hi,
Here is something we can do to make our self’s heard!

Something we can do:
A letter from Jane Brody, NY Times:

Dear Friends: Below is a missive of great import to the future of our
country. I do hope you'll read it thru to the end and follow thru.
Ourselves, our children and our grandchildren will pay the price if this
election should turn out wrong.
Thanks, Jane Brody Engquist

On behalf of my brilliant colleagues Lyra Kilston and Quinn
Latimer, editors at the esteemed art magazine Modern Painters, I pass on the
following--

Friends, compatriots, fellow-lamenters,

We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt since the
announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the
Republican Party. We believe that this terrible decision has surpassed mere
partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farceon the part of a pandering and
rudderless Presidential candidatethat has a real possibility of becoming
fact.

Perhaps like us, as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palin
and her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to for ourselves and
for our present or future daughters. To date, she is against sex education,
birth control, the pro-choice platform, environmental protection,
alternative energy development, freedom of speech (as mayor she wanted to
ban books and attempted to fire the librarian who stood against her), gun
control, the separation of church and state, and polar bears. To say nothing
of her complete lack of real preparation to become the second-most-powerful
person on the planet.

We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, a
mother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solely as
a rash, incompetent, and all together devastating choice for Vice President.
Ms. Palin's political views are in every way a slap in the face to the
accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers so
fiercely fought for, and that we've so demonstrably benefited from.

First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does not
demonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumed that
the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win over women
voters. We want to disagree, publicly.

Therefore, we invite you to reply here womensaynopalin@gmail.com
with a short, succinct message about why you, as a woman living in this
country, do not support this candidate as second-in-command for our nation.

Please include your name (last initial is fine), age, and place of
residence.

We will post your responses on a blog called "Women Against Sarah
Palin," which we intend to publicize as widely as possible. Please send us your
reply at your earliest conveniencethe greater the volume of responses we
receive, the stronger our message will be.

Thank you for your time and action.
VIVA!

Sincerely,

Quinn Latimer and Lyra Kilston
New York, NY
womensaynopalin@gmail.com

**PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY! If you send this to 20 women in the next hour,
you could be blessed with a country that takes your concerns seriously.
Stranger things have happened.

So the journey of a little girl who came from the loving arms of parents who supported her every whim, to the strong independent woman and mother who felt she had done all her homework to find the keys to health to give her and her family the best possible choices for eating and being healthy. To now the empowered mother who has been able to strip away the layers of film that have been applied to her over the years, is not the story you expect to hear.

Imagine this: As an only child, of divorced working parents I was often alone after school. Left to my own devices I would frequently eat three bowls of Trix or Captain Crunch. I remember after the second bowl how full I felt but I continued to the next bowl. I was addicted to the sugar, chemicals and synthesized additives. It gets worse.
I became a very good baker by the age of 13. I would make pies and eat spoons full of shortening straight. Looking back on that experience now makes me sick but maybe it makes sense. Maybe it takes going that far to come this far.

In January of 2007, at 42 years old and a self professed health and nutrition nut, I found myself sick with respiratory viruses. I had been experiencing this for the past few years and could no longer contribute it to having small children as my kids are now 8 and 16. This puzzled me because I felt like I had a very good diet. I ate mostly vegetarian, wholesome seemingly “natural” foods. We all know by now that diet is the cornerstone of health. I was also very active and used holistic and natural healing methods for over 18 years.

So how is it that by March of 2007 I was as sick as I had ever been before searching for a more answers to that elusive health key? I was soon to find it in the form of a dear friend acquainted me with Yerba Mate and the health benefits this little plant can provide.
I drank it every day throughout the day and I regained my health quickly and effortlessly, but a funny thing happened on the way to recovery. Not only was I nourished with 191 anti-oxidants and over 50 vitamins and minerals but I began to detoxify my body to levels I had not ever experienced with any other herb or treatment. I was even able to stop drinking coffee: the only “vice” I felt like I had that I was very attached/addicted to. As I began to shed the layers of toxins in my body with Mate as the catalyst for cleansing, my eyesight and education increased.

Now here is the part that I implore you to pay attention to: I started reading labels every day at my local “natural foods store” and realized that petroleum chemicals are packed into almost every food, drink, shampoo, home cleaning products in the store, not to mention the chemical laden air we breathe. This awakening made me thirst for knowledge and I embarked on reading research frenzy for information on chemical compounds added into foods and the dangers they present. The more I learned the more I continued to drink the Yerba Mate because it cleansed me of the toxins I had accumulated over many years of thinking I was eating healthy. Before this journey began I felt I was doing very well in my desire to provide my children with the best food choices possible. I was in for a shock when it became apparent from reading the labels of even the “organic” foods were not what they were masquerading as. Even “natural” foods or flavorings can be made from natural gas! That’s right I said gas: petro-chemicals. It was right about here I started to get mad. Mad as a mama cat!

This heightened awareness brought on by my own body and its cleansed state made it possible for me to begin to see, smell and taste the chemicals in everything I consumed and purchased. There are no 100% chemical free choices. I was no longer okay with “sort of eating well” and could feel the difference in my attitude, health and energy which fueled my quest. The only thing that continued to detoxify and shield my body from the onslaught of toxins was Yerba Mate. In a sea of choices for the average American there is not a better choice to nourish, fortify, strengthen and cleanse the body of dangerous toxins. I know because for the past 10 years I have tried every new cleansing system, program and diet. The layers of petro-chemicals continued to leave my body. Each day it was like another veil had been lifted and I could no longer consent to a pseudo chemical free diet. As a mother I was enraged at the lies we consumers were being spoon fed.

It was at this time I turned to my family and asked for them to also drink Yerba Mate. My daughter who is sixteen had started to drink with her friends “energy” drinks with enough chemicals and drugs to kill a horse. I know that our children and being drugged by the soft drink and fast food industries and I am here to offer the same wonderful plant, Yerba Mate as a solution for this problem. Energy drinks can be made with Yerba mate instead of chemicals that essentially act in the body just like methamphetamines, only legal. My son who is eight loves to drink Yerba Mate and I saw a huge difference in his attention span and behavior. I also started making food that was 100% chemical free for my family. I know that if more mothers understood how toxic and lethal these drinks and 98% of the food we feed our children are, they would band together to support an alternative. I beg you all, mothers, fathers, grandparents, students, teachers and lawmakers to stand for our future generations and help them to cleanse so they may awaken to a brighter, clearer, healthier way of life, full of positive events and choices.

I share my story for the sake of all beings who want to clarify their mind body and soul with healthy choices brought to you by Mother Nature not Uncle Sam, the USDA, FDA or MacDonald’s.

Hey everyone! As you may or may not know, my son was born prematurely. Granted, it was only 3 weeks and he had no health problems, but he was still early and it caused me a lot of worry.

Not every family is so lucky.

In an effort to help other families avoid the heartache of a premature baby, I've decided to support the March of Dimes and particiapte in WalkAmerica.

You can sponsor me for as little as $5, and every dollar helps. You can donate directly from my personal webpage with a credit/debit card or PayPal. If you prefer, I can also accept cash or check. Just click the appropriate box on my webpage.

Go to http://www.walkamerica.org/twizzlerninja

The money we raise helps save premature and sick babies. Premature birth is the #1 cause of newborn death and the biggest threat to babies’ health today, and through WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes is funding important research to find out why premature birth happens and what can be done to prevent it.

With your support, there’s hope.

I'm getting my things organized to head out for this year's burn (okay, realistically I'm trying to find last year's packing lists) . Every year it's a struggle to leave my daughter behind. Every year her school starts the week of Burning Man and every year I buy a ticket - some years I make it, some years she needs me too much and I stay home. I'm a single mother and this is the longest stint she stays with her dad each year - normally she's only with him for one or two days at a time.

Does anyone else struggle with leaving their kids to attend? It always feels selfish, but also feels like a much needed time to be myself. Thoughts, ideas? I always bring paper, envelope and stamps, but the letters arrive after I'm home with her, so it doesn't help her much.

On Saturday night in Black Rock City, The Man burns every year. On Sunday night in The Future, a pregnant Mother will burn right where he stood, to mourn the loss of her unborn child. Fire in the Belly (www.fireinbelly.com) is an interactive art installation my team is presenting at Burning Man this year.

We are placed at 8:30 and the Esplanade but it will be moved on Sunday afternoon and burned upon the Man platform at 8:00pm Sunday night.

Want to personalize this installation? If so, we suggest the following ways that may require some pre-planning....

*Write a letter to weave into the art or tuck into the body of the woman
*Bring burnable trinkets to leave upon the alters
*Bring a pen/paint and write a message/paint upon the structures
*coordinate with some friends a ritual or performance
*????

We are open to having the installation space used as a performance platform of any type as long as it doesn't get burned prior to being moved ('cuz BM would never forgive us for scorching the playa...)

Where ever your journey takes you, I hope you have a fabulous burn!

Glimmer

PS: If you want to be involved in the initial installation that will occur Sat/Sun pre-event. We could also use assistance on Sunday starting at 1pm., Sept 3rd to move the three structures to the Man platform. Drop by the installation site on either occasion if you want to participate in this way.

On Saturday night in Black Rock City, The Man burns every year. On Sunday night in The Future, a pregnant Mother will burn right where he stood, to mourn the loss of her unborn child. Please help her at www.fireinbelly.com!

Every pregnancy involves a woman’s greatest hopes and fears, and 20% of all first pregnancies in the US are lost pre-birth. It happened to me. No one knows why, and we have no rituals in our culture to process that grief. “Fire in the Belly” was born so we can all release this pain in a ritualistic catharsis for everyone that has ever lost a child, or hoped for one, or feared for one.

The installation will consist of an extremely pregnant woman flanked by pagodas containing a child’s nursery (hope) and a doctor’s waiting room (fear) – the same pagodas that adorned the SF Precom stage. It will all be Playatech on steroids - giant 3D plywood puzzles with no fasteners in sight. All surfaces will be whitewashed for purity and writing messages, and the pagodas will contain simple altars for offerings and solemn ceremonies.

On Sunday, we hope to move the entire installation to where The Man stood, though some fear it cannot be done. As you return to BRC from the Temple embers, fire will ignite from The Mother’s womb to consume the installation, releasing the sorrows and fears of all parents to the heavens.

Please participate in a big wood installation and burn that will bring tears and cheers to so many in our midst that need closure. Fire in the Belly is sure to be the hottest miscarriage in history, and we still need team members, lots of blacklights, and another thousand bucks to buy wood. So, if you’ve ever hoped or feared for a child, please participate somehow, and/or gift whatever you can - we’ve got a ton of art to build soon, so instead of a fundraiser we’d rather offer psychic tickets to catharsis at www.fireinbelly.com. We promise to process participants’ hopes and fears about parenting more powerfully than any therapist ever dreamed.

Leaving no trace of her anguish as The Man did before her, The Mother will free us all to begin the magic of creating another child. Please help her…

My son lives with his father. My son is 7. I get to see him every other weekend ... my birthday ... some hollidays ...
I called up, even though it wasn't supposed to be my time to get him. I called up and asked if I could pick him up a weekeago tonight for pictures with Santa. They said yes. I pick up my dude with my man, (who I've been with for over a year now) and we head towards the mall ... We find Santa after looking for twenty minutes. I'm standing in line, here comes my man arround the corner and tells me to stay put, and he and my kid will be right back. They take off ... I'm in line waiting for pictures with Santa. The only thing going through my head is ... he's getting his hair cut. We had been talking about it for a day or so ... that's a possibility ... by the time they come back, three or four familys have passed me by, and there's an even longer line then when I first got inline!
After photo's with Santa, we went windo shopping. I asked my kid what was that all about ... he said what was what all about ... I said, the sneaking away with Lan part ... he said, oh um ... well ... stuff. I said ... what stuff ... he said, "<SIGH> MOM! I can't tell you." I asked him if Lan was with him the whole time and he said yes. I don't know why thtat mattered or why I asked it ...
Come Christmas morning just days after that ... my kid opened all his presents ... some fun stuff ... some educational stuff ... Then Lan wakes up and goes to the tree and pulls something out of it ... hands it to kid and he gives it to me while Lan's making his way back to bed.
I opened the box having only just poured my first cup of coffee. I tell everyone, don't mess with me while I'm drinking my first three cups of coffee ... I'm not awake enough to form complete sentances that any English teacher would recognize as English!
So they hand me this box.
I must interject again ... I was mega PMSed .. I had also been working I put in in four days time I put in about 50 hours, and in that same week my Lanny and I shopped - we power shopped ...
So I opened this box. I saw that it was white and red ... same size and color and all from my previous julery ... I thought maybe more julery. I opened the red and white box, and yup there was the other box ... I opened it up and inside was something that was pretty ... but I couldn't see because I was crying. I wiped my eyes and opened it again ... couldn't see because of the tears ... but finally I got to see it withoutht tears and put it on, and hugged my son ...
Later that night I got the scoop:
Miles wanted to get me something really nice and special for Christmas this year. He thought some julery like a necklace or ear rings or a ring. They (Lanny and Miles) went shopping at Wal*Mart and Miles passed the julery counter and asked if they could get it there and Lanny said no ... because if he wanted to get me somehting special they would go to a store that only dealt with julery, not julery and clothes and food and .... and ... and...
So that's why I got Miles on a Tuesday for pictures with Santa.
So while I was standing in line, they were at a julery store looking at pieces.
Miles began choosing julery that Lanny knew I wouldn't wear. And Lanny said, "Miles, you can't just choose something and hope she'll like it. You can't just choose to choose ... you saw the pieces I told you your mom would like, right? Okay, now I want you to close your eyes, think about your mom and get that wonderfull feeling in your heart ... got it? okay now open your eyes, and find that ring!"
Miles looked and looked ... then he said it was down to two different kinds ... he got the man behind the counter to get out both rings ... and Lanny said that he had excellent taste ... and Lanny said that if her were getting me rings, it'd be between those same two!
Miles chose my birth stone - Citrine.
I love it!
I've never had a ring before!
Not no class ring ... nothing
I've had those $0.10 rings from the dime shop - they lasted maybe 10 minutes before I either flung them at my brothers or lost them.

Must get more coffee

I'm new to this board and I want to sort of establish a "community" of Mothers at Burningman before I get there.....I used to camp with the Greeters, but most of them have older (teenage) children who won't attend (or no children yet) so I will probably be more likely to camp at "Kids Camp" this year.

********************************************
My Questions are:

Are you going this year?

How old are your children?

Do you think there is such a thing as "too young" even if I keep completely sober and aware of her environment/homeostasis at all times?

Are any of you camping at Kids Camp?

If you have taken your young children in the past, do you have any big tips about how to make the experience as safe/comfortable for them as possible (short of buying an RV)?

****************************************************

I have a daughter who will turn 2 during the Burn this year (September 1st) She was born 2 weeks EARLY on Labor Day, 2001-nearly on the Playa! I was originally planning on going, but "Everyone" (by that I mean people who have never been) warned me against it, and I'm now glad I listened, because she wasn't 2 weeks LATE like everyone else in my family's babies! I think birth in Black Rock City would have been a MOOP nightmare and I would have seriously violated the rule about no organic matter on the Playa surface!

Thanks for your input!

C'mon, you know what I mean. We need an adult babysitter who can come over to our house in the Sunset late and stay until morning and entertain the kids so we can sleep in. Someone who won't wake up when we come stumbling or dancing in at 4 or 5am. Someone who won't mind that we might wear costumes, carry props or bring people back with us. Someone open-minded, flexible and non-judgmental. Someone with their own transportation.

Our kids are older (nine and four,) so there isn't too much actual childcare involved and they don't wake up in the middle of the night. We just need a responsible adult in the house while we are out. Most of the time, we leave after they are asleep and return before they wake up.

We would consider a child-care share or exchange arrangement if you are interested, but we have found that a straightforward body-for-hire in our own home works best.

I would prefer a referral so that I know that the person is really ok with this type of situation.

I was just reading a posting on another tribe I'm on about pre-baby freak outs, and I was sharing with her about the pre-natal counciling me and my husband did, which was amazingly helpful for us. We were completely guided to this woman who just really helped us to move through a lot of fears we had about birth and parenting. If anyone if interested, write me and I'll tell you the story if how we found her, but I won't bore y'all that don't want to read all that ;).

Anyway, after posting about it it crossed my mind to pass on the info to the other progressive parenting tribes in case it could help anyone out. Her name is Carrie Contey. She is now living in Austin, Texas (although she was in Santa Barbabra when we did ours, and she did it all over the phone, and sent us the materials for excersises through the mail). She and her partner's website is http://www.earlyparenting.com, and her number is (512) 694-7794. I checked out the website, it has some great resources on it, so in either case you might wanna check it out for book recommendations and stuff.

It seems that they not only help with pre-natal bonding, but parenting "a growing child", so I'm assuming that they also help parents with after birth questions too. I can't personally say what that's like 'cause I haven't worked with her in that way, but what we did do was great.

If anyone has any questions about what she helped us with just drop me a line :)
We are not going to Burning Man this year because I just had a baby! This would have been our 6th year in a row, plus I'm a long time Playa Info volunteer...but, no complaints - what a great reason not to go!

I've been trying to find out about a webcast of the burn. Does anyone have any information on this? The BM website said earlier that there would be no official webcast this year. However, in years past there were some folks who did their own webcast. I did a search but can't come up with anything.

A friend told me about Folding Time and their web-cam videos, but I can't find any current info on their stuff. If I understand it correctly, it appears that they make their web-cam videos available long after the event is over.

Can anyone help out with any info?

We plan on decorating our apartment with el wire and watching the burn live, if possible. If we can't figure it out, we can at least watch the Aqua Burn movies on dvd, and our tons of 8mm playa footage from years past. We also have several photo albums of pictures to reminisce over.

It's hard staying home when all our friends are leaving for the playa, and also when we see all the cool art cars on the freeway heading to Black Rock City. Hopefully we'll be joining them next year with our little burner babe!

To those of you going, have a wonderful burn! We'll be with you in spirit.

Hello,

So I'm really diving in this year. After two fantastic child free years at BM, my husband and I decided on the playa last year that we would bring our 11 year old son out with us this year. Our decision was not only made because we missed him immensely and kept saying things like - "Wow, Mason would love that" - but also because of Mason's intense desire to attend and we don't think he would have let us out of the house this year without him. Then I found out I was pregnant in January -we had just started trying and since I'm 33, it's been a decade since the first was born, etc., we thought it would take some time. Evidently, my ovaries disagreed. Joyful news but we soon realized that this year was going to be just a tad bit different. I am six months pregnant at this very moment and will be in the middle fo my 7 month when we roll into BRC. We have taken some precautonary "comfort" steps for this new adenture - we bought a vintage travel trailer and I think with the added creature comforts we should all be ok with the environmental challenges only the playa can throw at you. But, I would love to hear from you other Mom's about any experiences you may have had with bringing the babes to the playa or being pregnant. I've read the pregnant on the playa and kidsville stuff on the BM.org website but it seems to tackle all of the basics that anyone past their virgin year know - keep hydrated, cool, refrain from embibing, etc. I would really love to hear what an average day of activites for their children was like or any other valuable experiences. Also, I would love to set up some kind of network list if possible for when out at BM to hook up with other kids, etc. We camp with the Woonami Village usually and there really aren't any youngsters among the group (unless you count the gorgeous 18 year olds everywhere:)

Thanks,
A true co-op would be great. It would be sweet to have something like this going on in or near the Mission, but if it worked out well we could travel. We're looking to hang out with kids around his age, say 8 to 15 months. His dad and I are kinda low-budget right now...which is also why I need some more time for me so that I can get back to the business-end of my art work. I have lots of experience with little ones, so if the trade-thing works out I'd be glad to take yours for the day and switch. You get it. So, let me know what you all think and get back to me.
I have a wonderful husband, but there are times he just doesn't understand - so hopefully this will be a good place to turn for understanding and advice! Hope to get to know you all!

Hey guys!

Our family (the Wilde's) is starting a co-op day care along with two other families: the Ward's and the Mars’s . We are looking for a fourth family to join us. We all live in Oakland, CA and would like to have someone in or very near Oakland.

If you are interested, email me at jenn_wilde@yahoo.com (feel free to forward this message if you know someone who might fit).

Here are the particulars:

1. Day care would be four days a week, days not yet determined. We would like to have 6 hours a day (9am – 3pm) of care.

2. We are following the model outlined on the bananas web site – each week day is hosted by a different family. Hosting includes having the children at your house, helping with child care, and providing snacks and lunch. In our (the Wilde’s) case, Darcy (my husband) would help look after the kids in the morning, while I work, and I would look after them after noon.

3. We plan to hire one full time person to help out the hosting family. We do not have this person hired yet. If anyone has any leads on someone, please email me off list.

4. We would like to start this as soon as possible, and are actively looking for a care giver now.

5. The kids are Skyler Wilde (boy, 14 months), Tibee Ward (boy, 12 months), and Cypress Mars (girl, 14 months).

Thanks!

xoxo
Jenny

Not sure how many of you Burning Moms are Pagan moms as well, but I feel this is a relavent topic to any mother and daughter regardless of spiritual affiliation so I thought I would share.

My oldest girl is now at the time for a puberty rite/ceremony, and it came faster than we really expected. Her mother and I were envisioning next summer, camping, shopping, earpiercing the whole 25 yards, but Mother nature is on her own time table so we are rushing to get everything ready for this weekend.
We feel timing is very important.

We are starting by having a group of women (We are blessed with a large closely knit pagan community to lend a hand here), The women will take her away for the day to buy a nice new outfit, get a hair cut, get her ears pierced, and have lunch.
When they are done she will be brought back to the meeting place, where there will be a labyrinth set up, she will be given a list of questions this week to meditate on, as she walks the labyrinth she is stopped by priestesses who ask her those questions from earlier, and she has to answer. In the middle, she meets Aphrodite, who says powerful welcoming words and gives her something pretty. She walks out, and at the end is met by the women who greet her as Korai (Girl, no longer a child) and welcome her to the tribe of women. We go in for a feast and a long talk about women stuff, including our experiences as a teen, with menstruation, what it means to be a woman, and the rights and responsibilities involved. She gets to ask questions, if she wants. Those who wish volunteer to be guides for her. Then we do facials, and nails, and somebody gives her a makeup lesson. Those who can stay the night.

The next morning, we get her all dressed up with her new clothes and nice makeup, and take her out to brunch, where as many of the men as possible join us, Her father gives her roses, and she is introduced as Korai to the rest of the tribe.

So I wanted to ask if any of the other parents out there have done puberty rites and what they entailed?

Have any of you had puberty rites done for you?
I got a really cool pair of pants at Earthdance a couple months ago that are bloomers, picked up some halloween stuff, but most of the rest of Eris' stuff is hand me downs or Old Navy/Gap/Children's Place stuff because they're not *too* expensive. Also, if I make her anything (I just bought a sewing machine yippie) where are some good patterns?

I would love to have a weekend activity for us moms and kids! As most of you know I work full time so I can't join you on Fridays :( Maybe even invite the dads if they want to play too.

I thought we could meet up at Heather Farms in Walnut Creek on either Saturday or Sunday - either day works for me. Probably mid morning, maybe 11am? Heather Farms has a great playground for toddlers and a duck pond to feed the ducks and geese. There is a short trail to walk on that is paved. I thought I could bring Eris' wagon too.

Heather Farms is off Ygnacio. If you take the 24 out to the 680, you'll see the Ygnacio exit right when the 24 ends. Take a right off the exit, and follow Ygancio down a couple miles and it's on your left. I can give you guys better directions later.

I think there is a farmers Market in WC on either Sat or Sun too. I'd have to look it up.
